You’re probably wondering how I ended up in this situation…
TLDR:
I’ve tried a lot of things, hated some and loved many. My passion is education for myself and others, and the current system just is not serving anyone. So, I teach as many different people and things as I can as a tutor and substitute. [My boyfriend would also like a night off from learning so much, so please give him a break.]
The Resume:
Emily has received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Women’s and Gender Studies, and a Bachelor of Education After Degree (BEAD, great distinction). During her time in education, she has focused her professional development opportunities on supporting neurodiverse students, queer and trans students, and new language learners.
Emily has classroom teaching experience in grades 7, 8, and high school drama, ELA, and social studies. She began private tutoring in 2025, launching her business in early 2026. She has loved working with children her whole life, volunteering as a childcare provider at a shelter for families fleeing domestic violence, helping to organize youth and family activities for her church community, and various other volunteer and paid experiences over the years.
Emily’s teaching practice is distinguished by student-centred teaching, interest-led learning activities, and integrated social and emotional learning (SEL). You/your child can expect from a typical tutoring relationship:
An intake call to decide if the service is a good fit;
A flexible first session focused on getting to know each other and getting comfortable;
An evolving and responsive plan that suits the student’s needs;
Services provided where you’re comfortable - in the home, library, local coffee shop, we can chat!; and
Regular or periodic (“as needed”) sessions according to tutor availability and student needs (30-60 minutes).
You will be asked to give some basic information about you/your child’s current academic status, relevant diagnoses, current adaptations at school, and other school or family factors that my impact their ability to focus or learn. This information is very important to the success of your sessions, but is kept confidential.
Children and teens who are uncooperative to the point that learning cannot take place over an extended period will not be kept as clients. However, resistance is normal when students are struggling and every effort will be made to build resilience through these times and continue to work together.
